SCSN Announces Schedule and Route for 2014

(Goleta CA, 14 Mar 2011) The Southern California/Southern Nevada Caravan Organizing Team announced today that the 2014 National Corvette Caravan will be a six-day trip. It will make overnight stops in several new cities and will cover new ground in the route it takes to Bowling Green. The Section will depart Friday 22 August 2014. We will stop overnight in Williams AZ, Albuquerque NM, Amarillo TX, Tulsa OK and Poplar Bluff MO. We'll arrive in Bowling Green on Wednesday afternoon, 27 August.

"We've made a number of changes in the Caravan for '14 which we think people will like," Section Captain Hib Halverson tells the eNews. The first, is the extension of the event to a sixth day. We did this for two reasons. 1) Early feedback from Caravaners who went with us in 2009 and plan go go again in 2014 indicated that a majority of people would like to make the trip six days. 2) It allows us to link-up with Captain Tuna Dobbins' Oklahoma/Texas Panhandle Section.

Also new for 2014 and which we talked about in the first issue of the eNews, is our first overnight moving to Williams. This is a town which likes car events and loves Vettes. Historic 66 runs through Williams and along the downtown portion are restaurants, bars and shops. One idea the Team is kicking around is having a sort of "street party/car show" where we park all the Vettes downtown while everyone eats at the restaurant of their choice. When my Wife, the Fairest Sandra the Red, and I did a scouting trip to Williams last Fall we really enjoyed our visit - it was what convinced me to move the first night from Flagstaff to Williams for 2014.

"Day Two will take the us to Albuquerque, New Mexico," Halverson continued. "That will be a much shorter day than we've had on previous Caravans and will allow us to more time to socialize that night. Day Three will have us in Amarillo Texas where we will join Captain Tuna Dobbins' Oklahoma/Texas Panhandle Section. From there, we'll head northeasterly for an overnight in Tulsa OK. After that we'll explore some of Historic 66 in Oklahoma and Missouri then we'll spend our final night on the road at Poplar Bluff Missouri. On the last day, we will approach Bowling Green from the west rather then from the south."

As for the route, from Ontario over to Amarillo, the SCSN Section will cover some ground it's been over before mainly because there are only so many ways across the desert southwest on the way to Texas. One side trip we may take is Historic 66 in California through the San Bernardino County towns of Baghdad, Amboy and Essex. That route was used for the 2003 Caravan, but was not considered for the '09 event due to poor road conditions. The Organizing Team's "recon unit" will drive that road sometime this year and then Section Captain Halverson will decide, based on the road's condition and the time required to drive it, whether or not the Caravan will take that route.

Day Two will take us from Williams over to Albuquerque, New Mexico which will be a shorter run that Day Two has been in past Caravans. Currently the plan is to take advantage of the shorter time on the road with a later departure time (you can sleep in...well, just a little) and an earlier arrival time (longer cocktail "hour").

On Day Three we'd like to find some new parts of Historic 66 in New Mexico and Texas to explore and to what extent we do that depends on what we find on some additional reconnaissance trips Organizing Team members take between now and 2014.

SCSN and AZ/NM together?

On January 16, National Corvette Caravan Chairman, Paul Mariano, announced the appointment of Holt Davis of Artesia, New Mexico as Captain of the Arizona and New Mexico Section. Our Section Captain, Hib Halverson, and Capt. Davis immediately began discussions about how the two Sections could join-up and run together from Day 2 to the end of the trip.

In February, "Commander" Brent Hicks visited Artesia, NM and met with Holt Davis. Past Captains of the AZ/NM Section have been unable to join with SoCal/SoNev due to a significant difference in their schedule. At this meeting, Brent and Holt began working on the details of running the two Sections together. Additionally, Holt Davis revealed some preliminary plans to stage an event in Albuquerque on Sunday night.

As the SCSN and AZ/NM Sections continue to develop plans, we'll report on them here in the eNews.
